A plea from GNO | GNO
by lawrence[后接中文版]
Dear GNO Readers:
The fourth 2pi Festival will be held at Loft 49, Hangzhou on Nov 25, 2006. 2pi Festival is currently the most important large-scale experimental music festival in China. It is also the only opportunity to listen to all the major experimental musicians/sound artists in one go. With the hard work of curator/artist LI Jianhong 李剑鸿, the festival has developed from a small local event to an annual report of Chinese experimental music. Widely celebrated by nationwide listeners, it is also an event not to be missed by Chinese new music researchers.
Apart from the regular lineup of the two previous installments, one artist from Taiwan will debut on this year’s 2pi Festival: CHIANG Liwei 江立威, aka Wei, the owner of the record label Recorderz and an active member of the Taipei sound art scene. It’s also going to be Wei’s first performance in mainland China. Two European artists will probably show up on stage as special guests.
The festival is programmed in a new way this year, with the two-day concert compressed into ten continuous hours in one day, from 14:00 to 24:00. The audio-visual marathon promises to blow your mind!
The first three 2pi Festivals were presented and sponsored by the organizers, with modest funding from friends occasionally. The organizers had been struggling to break even the cost of PA system rental and artists’ food and accomodation with box office income, and most of the transportation expense were covered by individual artists themselves. They travelled to Hangzhou for the festival from Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and even Taipei. This kind of gung-ho spirit is the best evidence of the significance and influence of 2pi Festival.
Your help is needed, we at GNO plead for your generosity. Please consider supporting 2pi Festival.
What you can do:
1. Donate! Any amount would be very helpful. Please contact LI Jianhong directly. Email: monkyking2 [at] yahoo.com.cn; Mobile: +86 137 3587 2445
Please wire the money to: Li Jianhong, 9558 8212 0200 4273 766, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. We would be grateful if you could notify Li about your name and the amount of your donation via SMS or email.
2. Go to see the festival (it is worth the time and money), and buy their CDR releases.
Thanks for your time. Any help from you would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Lawrence R.Y. Li, Dajuin Yao

电邮:monkyking2 [at] yahoo.com.cn

Hi,
Is it possible to buy some kind of compilation cd(r) of the participating artists over the internet?
Comment by martin — November 12, 2006 #
Hi Martin, if you’re in Mainland China, this is the place to go:
http://shop33598856.taobao.com/
It’s the online shop of Sugar Jar, the CD store that boasts the most comprehensive collection of Chinese new music. The physical shop is at 798, Beijing.
You can reach the shop owner Lao Yang for an inventory list via sugarjar [at] gmail.com
Other than that, some of the participating artists’ works can be downloaded for free in the “download” section of our host site Chinese New Ear. I’ll upload more soon.
