(Extra)ordinary sayings about sound #5
by lawrence“In the summer, I moved to an in-law’s apartment on the edge of the town. It was an attic, looking into a front yard as deep as a hundred yards. The landlady drove from the house to the front door to pick up the mail. Right behind the house lies a railway, beyond which cornfields opened up to infinity. The landlady warned me about the noisy passing of a daily train at ten o’clock in the evening. When the train arrived punctually, it came not only with noise but also vibration. The whole house shivered, with joy, as I soon came to realize. Since the train passing constituted the singular, physically stimulating event of the day. More than once, I caught myself waiting for the train.” - CHANG Yung Ho, in Yung Ho Chang Writes 作文本, Joint Publishing, 2005.

The new Monolake album “layering buddha” was uploaded to Soulseek three weeks before release date.
The only people who received pre-release copies of the album were music journalists.

I love these “sayings about sound.” I read them to my roomates every night. I look forward to more!

hi Luke, thanks for the kind words. There will definitely be more, I promise.
Christiaan, those file-sharers must be hardcore fans cos Layering Buddha is vinyl!
Similar thing happened in a private experimental music community of which I’m a member: Michel Chion’s new album Tu was uploaded a couple of weeks ago, before the official release date. However that’s a very small community (less than 50 members) and most members maintain a high moral - for all the ambiguity of the word - standard.

layering buddha is a CD release.
there is also a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl box set. but the main release is a CD.

file sharing - be it from pre-releases (put out for marketing reasons) or indeed post-release burns is part of our everyday music-sharing experience - got to live with this stuff in these times - not too sure what he is so upset about as making a big fuss about it will only alert even more peole and indeed promote the ‘illegal’ downloads - and of-course help with the marketing !

i think the targets of robert’s anger are the music journalists, who were the only ones with the pre-release copies, and are therefore suspect in starting the whole bootleg process…
we all expect to end up on soulseek very quickly after release. and i have to give personal thanks to members of the soulseek community for helping push forward my carreer. bootleg FM3 downloads have led directly to gig opportunitites in europe.
for Robert, it is a “moral” issue of trust between artist and reviewer. or at least that my take on things…
much more detail direct from the souce can be found on a Ableton Live Forum about this topic:

yep - sooulseek is indeed a unique fixture in modern-day promotional tools - what Robert should have done to tackle his problem is contact the known 100 or so journos directly - the track he has taken has only achieved him indirectly getting more exposure for his release - and indeed notifying everyone exactly how to get hold of it for free !! - Maybe next he can tell us of an FTP where we can get new cracks of LIVE before we all bother paying for the upgrades - ho ho !
