Wolfenstein: Napoleon’s Kef
by lawrenceTaipei sound artist XIE Zhongqi (Wolfenstein)’s discography recently saw a new item: an unusual “CD + Painting + Novel” release called Napoleon’s Kef. It’s a collboration between Wolfenstein, writer Xi Yue 夕月 and painter Otter. The novel, set in the pre-photography 19th century, is an attempt of constructing an imaginative world in which human beings are deprived of visual sense. Instead of a regular book format, the writer and producer have chosen to print the novel in the CD leaflet, which is designed by Natako in a special multi-fold fashion.

In a post about the release, the Recorderz blog said:
(in translation)
It is our opinion that Wolfenstein should be rated, without any doubt, as the best computer musician in Taiwan. We base this judgement on his boundless listening experience and the sincerity of his restless self-challenging experimental attitude. The latest work Napoleon’s Kef, realized by him and writer Xi Yue, is a piece of evidence of his jaw-dropping progress of sound manipulating and composing in the past few years.
Sample of Napoleon’s Kef can be downloaded here, first chapter of the novel (in Chinese) here.

[…] I always have a great deal of expectation from Wolf’s performance, especially after the crazy, stalwart gig at Nanhai a while ago (the rhythm was challenging Autechre). This time at Boven, he did a live remix of his new CD Napoleon’s Kef. There was nothing new in the electronic noise of the first two minutes, but just when you thought you’re getting used to it, Wolf san took a sudden turn and played a light-hearted, weird little piano tune sample, inducing laughter among audience.
